HCV Essentials offers a flexible, self-paced introduction to the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program. Designed for new and aspiring HCV professionals, this course provides foundational knowledge to help you understand and administer the program effectively, while supporting its mission to assist low-income families.

Through engaging modules, you’ll explore key topics such as program structure, eligibility, waiting list management, and essential calculations. Interactive lessons guide you through how to calculate annual income, apply deductions, and determine adjusted income, all of which impact tenant eligibility and rent. You’ll also learn how to calculate rent portions, utility allowances, and total tenant payment (TTP).

The training includes updated definitions and income inclusions/exclusions permitted under HUD’s current HOTMA guidance. You will learn how to process cases using today’s requirements, with a brief overview of future HOTMA changes to reduce surprises down the line.
