Implicit Bias: What is it and Why Does it Matter and Privilege, Bias, and Debiasing Systems

Description
Part 1:
Participants will learn how our brains think and the shortcuts it takes to keep us on track. You will be introduced to the concept of implicit and cognitive bias and how it can lead to biased and privileged systems.
Part 2:
Participants will look at how privilege and bias impact design, implementation, and choice making in housing and community development programs. After a quick review of the concepts of implicit bias that affect systems of privilege, there will be an overview of the concepts of privilege, white privilege (dominant culture privilege), and the concept of system debiasing.
Objectives
After completing Part 1 of this training, participants will be able to:
Explore how your brain processes information
Discover what schemas are and how they impact us
Develop a personal understanding of how cognitive biases may create biased systems
Recognize how biases impact service delivery and community perception of our agencies and constituents
After completing Part 2 of this training, participants will be able to:
Recognize how stereotypes, In Group/Out Group, and other concepts form the base of systems of privilege
Recall the many forms of privilege that exist and how privilege is relative
Review operations and systems to reduce the impact of dominant culture bias
